Katima mulilo: The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) here on Monday began investigating the death of a Zambian national, identified as Lubinda Mate, who was found badly injured by school-going children last week Friday.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the official NamPol report details that the 54-year-old was discovered in a critical condition at a village in the Bukalo area of the Katima Mulilo Rural Constituency. The children who found him promptly informed local elders about his state.
The report further indicates that the man's death was communicated to the police on Monday at approximately 18h30. It reveals that he was initially taken to the Bukalo clinic by a 'Good Samaritan' and subsequently transferred to the Katima Mulilo District Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The incident was not reported to the police until Monday, 09 February 2026, at 18h30, as stated in the report. The Serious Crime unit has been informed and commenced investigations into the matter. A post-mortem examination is scheduled for this week, and the investigation is ongoing.
In another development, Zambezi NamPol's head of community policing, Chief Inspector Kisco Sitali, on Wednesday confirmed the re-arrest of an inmate with a pending attempted murder case. The inmate escaped from the Menias Brian Libuto Police Station at around 19h21 on Monday.
Sitali mentioned that the inmate managed to escape by jumping from a moving van as it approached the police station gate, fleeing into nearby bushes. Another inmate, who remained in the van, informed officers that the van's door accidentally opened without the driver's knowledge, facilitating the escape.
The male suspect will now face an additional charge of escape from lawful custody.
