Mariental: The Hardap Region this week concluded a series of stakeholder engagements aimed at strengthening coordination on regional development and the fight against HIV and AIDS.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the Regional Development Coordinating Committee (RDCC) met in Mariental from 07 to 08 July, followed by the Regional AIDS Coordinating Committee (RACOC) stakeholders' meeting on Thursday. The RDCC and RACOC meetings brought together representatives of government ministries, traditional authorities, and development partners to review first-quarter progress and align development priorities for the 2026/27 financial year.
The committee assessed progress on ongoing projects, coordinated sector plans, and identified priority interventions to improve service delivery across the region. Discussions focused on youth empowerment, climate-smart agriculture, renewable energy initiatives, and strengthening engagement with Constituency Development Committees to ensure regional development planning responds to community needs.
Speaking at Thursday's RACOC meeting, Hardap Regional Council chairperson and Mariental Rural Constituency councillor Simon Kooper emphasized the need for a coordinated, multi-sectoral approach involving government institutions, development partners, and civil society organisations in the fight against HIV and AIDS. He highlighted the misconception that HIV is no longer a public health concern, noting that the disease remains prevalent and requires sustained interventions.
Kooper urged ministries, government agencies, and other stakeholders to actively participate in RACOC activities and commit resources towards prevention, treatment, care, and support programmes. He expressed concern over new HIV infections in the region, underscoring the need for timely interventions and increased public awareness.
Kooper also highlighted the broader socio-economic impact of HIV and AIDS, stressing that affected communities ultimately impact the workforce and national development. He encouraged community members to continue observing HIV prevention measures and remain vigilant in combating the disease.
The RDCC and RACOC meetings are part of the Hardap Region's efforts to enhance intergovernmental coordination, improve service delivery, and promote sustainable socio-economic development while addressing key public health challenges.
