Ondangwa: The Namibia Law Association (NLA) has condemned the killing of Ondangwa-based prosecutor Justine Shiweda, describing her death as a blow to the administration of justice and the rule of law. The 30-year-old regional control prosecutor was shot and doused with corrosive chemicals at her home in Ondangwa in October 2025 and died due to her injuries in a Windhoek hospital on Saturday.According to Namibia Press Agency, in a statement issued on Sunday, chairperson Illeni Gebhardt said that the NLA unequivocally condemns the act of violence and any attempt to intimidate, corrupt, or silence legal practitioners in the execution of their constitutional and professional duties. She emphasized that the association is calling for a properly functioning criminal justice system, including adequate resources, capable prosecuting offices, and support for officials who handle criminal matters.NLA called for a thorough, independent, and expedited investigation into the attack and death of Shiweda and said all th ose responsible must be brought to book. Shiweda was reportedly targeted in connection with a criminal matter she was handling. Six suspects have since been arrested on a charge of attempted murder, among other charges, which will now be amended to that of murder.'The State bears a constitutional obligation to ensure that those entrusted with upholding the law are adequately protected and supported in the performance of their duties,' Gebhardt added. She stated that the rule of law is the cornerstone of Namibia's constitutional democracy, and it demands that prosecutors, defense legal practitioners, and presiding officers alike must be able to perform their functions without fear, favor, or prejudice.'Any attack on one actor within the justice system is an attack on the system as a whole, and ultimately on the rights and safety of all Namibians,' she said. The law association stressed that the safety and security of prosecutors and all legal practitioners must be regarded as a matter of national importanc e. The association conveyed its condolences to Shiweda's children, family, colleagues, and the broader Ondangwa community.
