Eiseb 10:The return of Ovambanderu community members from Botswana to Namibia should extend beyond mere repatriation and foster community development, according to National Planning Commission Director-General Kaire Mbuende.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Mbuende conveyed this message in a speech delivered on his behalf during the Ovambanderu Repatriation Day event at Eiseb 10 settlement, located in the Otjombinde Constituency of the Omaheke Region. The commemoration marks the historic return of the Ovambanderu people on September 22, 1994. Their ancestors had fled to Botswana following the execution of Chief Kahimemua Nguvauva in 1896 and the colonial genocide and land dispossession by German colonizers between 1904 and 1908.
Mbuende emphasized that homecoming must include the development of infrastructure and services, such as roads, water, electricity, schools, health facilities, telecommunications, and housing, to support a dignified livelihood for the community.
He highlighted that the return of the Ovambanderu was a significant reconnection of descendants with their ancestral land, advocating for respect and support for those who chose to rebuild their lives in Namibia. Mbuende also addressed the interconnected development issues raised by the Eiseb Block community, including access to essential services and support for youth and small businesses.
The Director-General called for collaboration among government, traditional authorities, regional and local structures, development partners, the private sector, and communities to prioritize and implement effective development interventions. He stressed the importance of listening to the community in planning efforts and noted the significance of providing opportunities for young people through education, skills training, entrepreneurship, and employment.
Mbuende urged the community to not only reflect on the historical return but also to focus on creating sustainable livelihoods and opportunities, aiming to transform the Great Eiseb Homecoming into a foundation for lasting settlement and growth.
