Ankara: The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) has declared a ceasefire with Trkiye, following the call of its jailed leader Abdullah Ocalan for disarmament and dissolution, local media reported on Saturday. The PKK Executive Committee announced in a statement that none of its forces would carry out armed actions unless attacked.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the PKK's statement expressed full agreement with Ocalan's call and a commitment to implement its requirements. The group also indicated a readiness to convene their congress, emphasizing the necessity of Ocalan's personal leadership, and urged for his release from prison.

The PKK expressed hope that relevant state authorities would ensure Abdullah Ocalan's physical freedom, allowing him to live and work under normal conditions. Ocalan had called on Thursday for all PKK-affiliated groups to lay down their arms and for the PKK to dissolve itself.

This development is part of a government initiative aimed at ending the PKK's 40-year-long insurgency against the Turkish state, a conflict that has claimed over 40,000 lives. Ocalan, imprisoned on Imrali island since 1999, is the founder of the PKK, which is designated as a terrorist organization by Trkiye, the United States, and the European Union.
