Windhoek: President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has paid tribute to the late war veteran and former Robben Island political prisoner, Lazarus Guiteb, recognizing him as a crucial figure in Namibia's struggle for independence. Guiteb passed away on 15 July 2025, in Windhoek at the age of 82.
According to Namibia Press Agency, President Nandi-Ndaitwah described Guiteb as a 'gallant freedom fighter' who earned numerous accolades, including the Eagle First Class medal, for his contributions to the liberation movement. The president's statement was delivered by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Mines, Energy and Industries, Natangue Ithete.
Guiteb's contributions were also acknowledged by his peers and former leaders. Former Ambassador Marten Kapewasha, a fellow Robben Island inmate, noted Guiteb's roles as a trained soldier, political commissar, and intelligence officer for Swapo's People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN).
Former President Hifikepunye Pohamba expressed condolences, highlighting Guiteb's critical role in the liberation struggle, particularly as a transporter of Swapo fighters and a supplier of food and medicine. Former President Nangolo Mbumba remembered him as a humble political giant of Swapo.
Namibia's Ambassador to China, Elia Kaiyamo, along with other Swapo Party stalwarts, sent written tributes read at the memorial service. They praised Guiteb as a devoted PLAN fighter and liberation icon, recounting his clandestine operations and efforts in supporting Swapo activities.
Born on 20 July 1942 at Farm Kazongomunja in the Otjozondjupa Region, Guiteb was imprisoned on Robben Island from 1977 to 1984 alongside notable figures like Herman Andimba Toivo ya Toivo, Ben Ulenga, Michael Shikongo, and Ruben Itengula. After his release, he traveled to Angola for military and intelligence training.
Guiteb is survived by his wife, Theresia Maria Guites, seven children, and several grandchildren. His burial is scheduled for Saturday at the Orwetoveni Cemetery in Otjiwarongo.
