ReconAfrica has found further evidence of a working petroleum system in the Kavango Basin in the first section of its second well, its spokesperson Ndapewoshali Shapwanale said on Friday.

Shapwanale said this just confirms what ReconAfrica found in the first well.

On 15 April 2021, the energy company through the Ministry of Mines and Energy announced that it found oil and gas indicators that showed over three intervals at its first well.

The first well found more than 200 meters of indicators and shows.

Shapwanale said based on the initial analysis of the first section, 134 meters of light oil and gas is showing in the second well.

“The shows are similar in character to those seen in the first well. The second well, like the first one, is in the same sub-basin and shows clear evidence of a working conventional petroleum system,” she said.

She said as the company moves into its early stage exploration programme, it is strengthening its environment, social and governance (ESG) performance standards.

“Our goal in expanding our ESG programme is to not only meet but exceed regulatory compliance as we continue to implement measures to protect the environment and enhance the livelihoods of the people of Namibia,” she said.

Geologist at the Ministry of Mines and Energy Ralph Muyamba confirmed the announcement by the company, saying the ministry’s employees are on site during the process.

Muyamba said what ReconAfrica’s announcement means is that they found certain rocks together that are likely to host oil.
