Swakopmund: Seventy per cent of the Erongo Sunam Desalination Project Joint Venture now officially belongs to Swakop Uranium. This was announced during a joint briefing held by the mining company and NamWater here on Tuesday.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the partnership establishes a venture to develop a desalination plant in the Erongo Region. Under the venture structure, NamWater holds the remaining 30 per cent stake. 'This arrangement reflects the investment commitments and operational interests of both parties. Swakop Uranium contributes capital and technical input, NamWater ensures public-sector oversight and integration with national water infrastructure,' the parties said.

The project involves the delivery of water infrastructure, with key elements including the construction of a seawater desalination plant using energy-efficient technology and upgrades to bulk water conveyance, including pipelines and pumping systems. It also includes integration with existing NamWater infrastructure to connect the plant to regional supply networks.

The briefing confirmed that negotiations have reached a conclusion and technical, commercial, and governance approvals are secured. The transaction advisor also finalised the execution version of the agreement. 'The Erongo Sunam Desalination Joint Venture Project is a landmark initiative that will play a pivotal role in shaping Namibia's water-secure future,' the project partners stated.

Next steps include the registration of the Erongo Sunam Desalination Project Joint Venture Company, detailed engineering, environmental assessments, and construction planning. The initiative aims to strengthen water security for the Erongo Region and the national supply system.

For Swakop Uranium, the project ensures a long-term, cost-stable water supply for mining operations, while for NamWater, it expands bulk water production capacity while reducing pressure on inland water sources.
