A 19-year-old male was shot to death in the early hours of Tuesday after he reportedly tried to steal items from a residence in the Kuisebmond residential area of Walvis Bay.

The deceased was reportedly shot by the owner of the property who noticed him in his yard with some of the items in his possession around 01h00 on Tuesday.

Erongo Crime Investigations Coordinator Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu in a crime report said the suspect (the owner of the house) was woken up by what sounded like someone walking on the roof of his house.

“He then went to investigate the movements through the kitchen window when he reportedly saw one male person in the yard, who dropped a washing basin belonging to the house owner when he saw him. The victim then got away by climbing back onto the roof. The suspect reportedly fired warning shots with his 9mm pistol and in the process, one of the bullets struck the deceased in the abdomen,” Iikuyu noted.

According to the police, the man was later found dead on top of the roof along with some of the stolen items, which all belonged to the suspect.

It is also suspected that the deceased was accompanied by another suspect who fled the scene.

The body was taken to the Walvis Bay Police mortuary for a post-mortem to be conducted to determine the cause of death.

The firearm used was confiscated from the 44-year-old suspect, who has not yet been arrested as investigations were still being conducted.
