Pregnant women appeal to FG to meet resident doctors’ demands

Some pregnant women have appealed to the Federal Government to meet the needs of the striking resident doctors so they can return to work and offer healthcare services to Nigerians.

The women made the call on Saturday in Abuja at an outreach for pregnant women by the Help Africans Charity Network, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the doctors under the aegis of Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) embarked on an indefinite strike on July 26, after several ultimatums issued to the Federal Government to meet their demands.

The women said that access to healthcare delivery especially for pregnant women was very essential as they may need to see a doctor at any time during the duration of the pregnancy .

Some of the women were of the opinion that having to patronise private hospitals in a period of economic hardship that some of them are going through may hinder them from gaining access to the needed healthcare.

They, therefore, appealed to the Federal Government to meet the needs of the striking doctors very fast to avert avoidable casualties.

One of them, Mrs Hulda Adebayo, said that the government could do more to improve the health sector because it has all the necessary resources to make things better.

“There are a lot of people who are suffering and the government has the resources to put things in order.

“People, especially pregnant women, need to see the doctor when they come to the hospital, so how do you explain to them that doctor is not on seat, she may even be in labour and needs to be attended to urgently.

“Government should attend to the doctors and give them what they want so that they can go back to work,” she said.

Another pregnant woman, Mrs Oluchi Ejiagu, said that government hospitals are very affordable for the ordinary Nigerian which makes it the preferred healthcare destination for most of them.

According to her, the state of the economy makes it hard to patronise private hospitals, hence the reason many opt for government hospitals which has reduced cost for treatment.

“However, when the doctors are on strike it becomes very difficult for women to access health care.

“So I want the government to do something about these doctors because if they are not there most women do not have the money to access private hospitals so they will find it difficult to access healthcare.

“Imagine that you normally pay N5, 000 for your health care needs as a pregnant woman and all of a sudden you are asked to pay N45, 000 in a private hospital for the same healthcare provisions.

“It is a big deal. So, we want the doctors to come back so that we can access health care.”

The Founder of the NGO, Mr Owen Obakpolo, said the aim of the outreach was to give nursing mothers and pregnant women a sense of belonging in the face of the harsh economic situation of the country.

According to him, the NGO which began its operations in Australia aims to add its quota to help in reducing poverty in Africa.

It has therefore carried out outreaches in Liberia, Kenya and some states in Nigeria.

Mrs Stella Adejo, the FCT Coordinator, advised pregnant women to adhere strictly to instructions from their nurses and doctors during antenatal and urged them to observe exclusive breastfeeding especially, during the first six months of life.

NAN reports that some of the items distributed were baby diapers, clothes and wrappers.

Lagos LGs sensitise nursing mothers on exclusive breastfeeding

As part of activities to mark the 2023 World Breastfeeding Week, some Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos have sensitised women on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 2023 World Breastfeeding week, with theme: “Enabling Breastfeeding: Making a Difference for Working Parents”, is to enlighten nursing mothers on the importance of breastfeeding to babies and their health.

The Iba Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in collaboration with the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, District 5, flagged-off a sensitisation programme for nursing mothers to commemorate the World Breastfeeding week 2023.

Alhaja Folashade Yisa, Wife of the Council Chairman, who was also the chairperson of the programme, encouraged mothers to breastfeed babies at least six months straight without water.

Yisa advised nursing mothers to take care of their personal health as “whatever you take in also goes on to the baby”.

She urged the women not to allow breastfeeding hinder them from performing their duties as wife in the house.

“We urge you the mothers to breastfeed your babies exclusively and pay proper attention to their hygiene internally and externally,” she said.

Also, the Isolo LCDA in Lagos, joining the world to commemorate the year breastfeeding week, organised a health talk and workshop to advocate proper and exclusive breastfeeding.

Mrs Olajumoke Olasoju, Wife of the Council’s Chairman, who played host to hundreds of nursing mothers encouraged them on adherence to breastfeeding guidelines and its exclusive practice for the recommended period.

Olasoju, speaking on the theme “Enabling Breastfeeding: Making A Difference For Nursing Parents” called for support and encouragement for breastfeeding mothers especially at workplace.

“I salute every nursing mother here for the deliberate effort we are investing into nurturing our babies.

“Breastfeeding provides essential nutrients, protection against disease and also provides emotional and cognitive development for infants and that underscores it is important in the life of our babies.

“It’s important that we encourage exclusive and proper breastfeeding to raise healthy, bright and promising children like ourselves.

“As nursing mothers, we have to remain deliberate about this act and not allow any environmental barriers like we might have in our workplace discourage us,” she said.

According to her, breastfeeding is not only beneficial to babies but also to mothers and our society at large.

The council first lady added that breastfeeding has long-term benefits for individuals and society leading to healthier populations and reduced health conditions.

She called on stakeholders in the private sector and community to take a cue from government by creating support systems and consideration for nursing mothers in order to promote breastfeeding.

Olasoju said that nursing mothers needed to be supported.

“As you can see, government has shown commitment to this in many ways.

“I will call on other stakeholders to take a cue from government. Husbands should be a support system to their wives more during nursing also, the community should create a supportive environment,” she said.

Mrs Abisodun Odusina-Adeoye, the Councilor Representing Ishagatedo/Ire-Akari in Isolo, said exclusive breastfeeding for over six months helped her children’s growth.

According to Odusina-Adeoye, exclusive breastfeeding boosts immune system and she encouraged nursing mothers to embrace the act reiterating that the benefits inherent were countless.

Dr Shola Tanimowo, the Medical Officer of Health, Isolo LCDA, also said that breastfeeding enhances the bond between the mother and child.

Tanimowo said it helped to create oxytocin, and prevent heart attack for the mother as well as cancers.

He added that breastfeeding also helped develop strong bones.

Mrs Bose Aroyehun, a Nurse in Isolo PHC, encouraged the mothers to ensure they ate a balanced diet.

She enlightened the nursing mothers on the right ways to breastfeed a baby, urging them to “bring their babies to the breast and not the other way round.”

According to her, positioning is important during breastfeeding.

NSIB, LASEMA sign MoU on preserving critical evidence at crash sites

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) on Saturday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on preserving critical evidence at crash sites.

Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony at the LASEMA office in Lagos, the Director-General, NSIB, Mr Akin Olateru, said it was important for agencies and organisations to partner in the interest of the country.

Olateru explained that partnership would further enhance safety and preservation of critical evidence at crash sites in cases of serious incidents and accidents involving any mode of transportation.

The director-general said the bureau had also volunteered to train over 200 staff of LASEMA in accident management.

Olateru explained that NSIB was not the first responder in accident cases, but noted that it was necessary for the agency to partner with first responders such as LASEMA, police, military and other critical organisations.

According to him, the partnership with LASEMA will aid accuracy of accident investigation and prevent recurrence.

Olateru recalled that it had in the past six years made attempts to partner with some government agencies, but failed to achieve this purpose.

He lauded the LASEMA management for agreeing to the MoU within five months of its first proposal.

“We had an initial meeting in March this year, which gave birth to this MoU that we are signing today.

“We have been pursuing some organisations in the last six years and nothing positive has come out of it. Whatever MoU we sign with organisations, it is for the interest of the nation.

“We are not the first responder in cases of accident; we are investigators. The first responders need to know their roles and we need to know ours, too.

“We are happy to train the staff of agencies. This is necessary for them to know what we do and how we go about them.

“Evidence needs to be preserved at crash sites. Partnering with an agency like LASEMA is good for our country. Lagos State is the size of four to five states in Europe.

“We will be deceiving ourselves when we say there will not be disasters. There will be disasters, but we need to partner for it so we can reduce the impact of the disasters.” he said.

The director-general noted that the new NSIB Act 2022 empowered it to investigate serious incidents and accidents in all modes of transportation with the aim of boosting safety.

He said the technical staff of LASEMA would be trained in batches by the Southern California Safety Institute of the United States of America (USA).

Earlier, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary, LASEMA, said the authority had signed MoUs with various organisations, including 25 United Nations agencies and a higher institution in the state.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the MoU would further assure the people of Lagos of the agency’s readiness to respond swiftly and manage any emergency.

He said that the State Government had, in recent years, expended billions of naira in the procurement of state-of-the-art ambulance vehicles and training of qualified personnel to equip the agency to manage disasters in the state.

“We also say that disaster management is the responsibility of everyone. We are signing this MoU with NSIB to take care of the airspace in case of an emergency or disaster.

“When the unfortunate aircraft accident happened earlier in the week, we worked together with the officials of NSIB at the crash site and our effort ensured that there was no mortality in the accident.” The permanent secretary said.

They had much in abundance in Amy Okonkwo, Murjanatu Musa, Sarah Ogoke and Ifunaya Okoro who were crucial for the Nigerian side

Okonkwo, as usual, unleashed the necessary qualities that kept Senegal on the back foot and she was so fantastic throughout the competition.

Her efforts were acknowledged, leading to her winning the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.

D’Tigress dominated the game and never gave Senegal any chance to dream, recording scorecards of 19-10, 24-21, 26-19 and 22-17 in the four quarters of the game.

Government rules out revision of 2023 State Budget

The minister of Finance, Vera Daves, ruled out Friday in Luanda the possibility of revision of the 2023 General State Budget (OGE),

According to the Finance minister, for August the government chose to captivate expenses, while the staff is already working on the draft for the State Budget for 2024.

The General State Budget for 2023 will record, by the end of the year, a deficit of around 10 billion dollars, according to projections recently presented by the government.

These projections result from the analysis carried out by the Ministry of Finance on the execution of the General State Budget (OGE) 2023, which assumes the price of a barrel of oil at USD 75, a production of 1 180 thousand barrels of oil per day.

The Ministry of Finance found that in the first half of this year, during the execution of the OGE, that a deficit balance and a budget deficit had been generated.

This scenario is based on the fact that the country recorded an oil production of around 900,000 barrels per day, over a period of almost two months, fluctuations in the price of a barrel on the international market, which reached below USD 75, benchmark of the OGE 2023, the increase in interest rates in international markets that continue to rise.

Angola has external financing contracts at a variable interest rate, which in the current context sees an increase in rates that are linked to the exchange rate.

In the meeting that Vera Daves had with journalists, in the traditional “press breakfast”, she said that the OGE2024, whose elements have already been approved by the Cabinet council, will be prepared based on a set of results to be defined, both on the revenue side or on the expendiure side.

She added that this process will allow the Government to gain time, while working on the draft of the 2024 State Budget (OGE).

With creditors, especially the local banking sector, the dialogue continues with a view to finding solutions that manage to lengthen the maturity and lower the cost of the debt, so that, eventually, the “pressure” on debt treasury is also reduced.

“All of this is an exercise that is not easy if, at the same time, we have to carry out a set of infrastructure projects that citizens need and that will bring a new debt”, Vera Daves pointed out, who expressed awareness of existing pressure towards a return to indebtedness scenarios.

For this reason, she considers that the exercise should be for everyone (budgetary units) to carefully define projects so that the Executive can carry out the limit of what is necessary, with actions that help to leverage the economy.

Swapo’s future victory not guaranteed: Alweendo

Minister of Mines and Energy, Tom Alweendo, said there is no guarantee that the Swapo party will continue to rule for another 30 years if party leaders do not do what the electorate expects of them.

Alweendo, who was speaking here on Saturday at the Swapo party regional executive committee meeting, added that the success of the party in the past was based on those that were in the leadership that managed to convince people that Swapo was the right party.

“We have ruled this country for 33 years. Things went well, yet we didn’t do all what we wanted to do, but there is no guarantee we will emerge victorious going forward. It’s not a given that it will happen because it happened before. Going forward, we as leaders are in a position again to convince the people that we are the right party,” he said.

Alweendo, who is also a national leader assigned to ||Kharas, said leaders should address issues and concerns of the electorates as it makes no difference for those put into power to address issues that do not concern or influence the people.

“We are here because people put us here and they have concerns and issues and if we have to address those issues, we need understand them first and then create programmes that will address them,” he said.

Swapo party regional coordinator for ||Kharas Region, Matheus Mumbala, urged party members to invest their energy and time in positive activities towards developmental issues, saying Swapo party members should be the driving force for the developmental agenda and not reactionaries or opportunists.

“We become reactional and emotional when the opposition do something. We are the government. We have the right to push minister to bring developmental to our people,” he said.

The meeting serves, among other objectives, to introduce the new national leaders assigned to the ||Kharas Region to the executive committee members.

Other leaders are Members of Parliament (MP), Lucia Witbooi, Laurencia Stephanus, Steve Ovambo, Tuuliki Abraham, Gaudentia Krohne and Minister of Higher Education, Training and Innovation, Itah Kandjii-Murangi.

NamWater pumps water into Etaka-Uuvudhiya earth canal

Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater) on Saturday pumped water from Olushandja South wall outlet into the Etaka-Uuvudhiya earth canal, which stretches across 130 kilometers.

The raw water is fit only for livestock consumption and agriculture purposes.

NamWater Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Abraham Nehemia, said that the exercise was done due to previous and recurrent prevalent drought reported in the northern part of the country.

Nehemia indicated that the Office of Prime Minister allocated N.dollar 3 million to ensure the completion of the project.

‘Households are expected to utilise the water for their daily needs, especially gardening for nutritional purposes,’ he said.

He added that they are confident that the water will be available in the dam to supply the canal until the rainy season.

Nehemia also indicated that they are expecting the new pumps at Calueque to be commissioned soon, adding that NamWater is strategically looking into the rehabilitation of most of its infrastructure in order to ensure sustainable water supply up to the year 2037 as a planning horizon.

Speaking during the same occassion on Saturday at Etaka dam, Omusati Governor, Erginus Endjala, said for the past 5 years, they did not really receive sufficient rainfall, which has affected many people living alongside the west of the canal, including Oshana and Oshikoto regions.

Endjala said that this is a game changer for people living along the canal, as their livestock will have water throughout the dry season.

He then urged community members to guard against the vandalism of the canal.
