Beijing: China has enacted a series of significant changes to its visa policies, aimed at encouraging international travel and enhancing global economic exchanges. These measures, initiated in response to the post-pandemic landscape, highlight China's commitment to openness and its role as a leading global economy.According to Namibia Press Agency, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced a landmark trial policy on November 24, 2023, which allowed visa-free entry for ordinary passport holders from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia. Initially set for one year, this policy was renewed in May 2024. Under these provisions, eligible travelers can enter China for business, tourism, family visits, or transit without a visa for up to 15 days. By November 30, 2024, the policy expanded to include 38 countries, and the maximum stay was extended to 30 days, reflecting an emphasis on facilitating exchanges.China has further broadened visa-exempt transit options, enabling travelers from 54 countries to utilize 35 ports for up to 144 hours without a visa. This expansion includes regional entry for foreign tour groups on cruise ships at 13 cities, with a 15-day stay, and visa-free visits to Hainan province for travelers on registered tours via Hong Kong and Macao.Streamlining of the visa application process has also been a priority. The number of application items has been reduced by 34 percent, appointment requirements at embassies have been eliminated, fingerprint exemptions increased, and visa fees reduced by 25 percent. These efforts align with the recovery of international passenger flights, which reached 81.7 percent of pre-pandemic levels in the first half of 2024.In addition to visa facilitation, China has improved its border control and payment systems. The average inspection time for transit passengers at airports has decreased from six minutes to two. Payment services now accommodate international travelers more effectively, with the integration of credit cards like Visa and Mas tercard into local payment platforms such as Alipay and WeChat Pay. Offline transactions using foreign bank cards have seen significant growth, with a 184 percent increase in number and a 150 percent increase in value by October 2024.Foreign currency exchange services have also been expanded to cover major airports, high-rated hotels, and popular tourist sites. These enhancements have contributed to a surge in international arrivals, with nearly 8.2 million inbound trips in the third quarter of 2024, marking a 48.8 percent increase year-on-year. Notably, approximately 4.9 million of these entries were visa-free, a 78.6 percent rise from the previous year. The improved visa policies and streamlined processes have also bolstered international business activities in China. From January to September 2024, 42,000 foreign-funded companies were established, an 11.4 percent increase compared to the previous year, indicating a robust interest in economic opportunities within the country.
