The 57-year-old man who succumbed to injuries he sustained shortly after a road accident outside Tsumkwe on Saturday, has been identified as Stephen Kusewena Kaurumine, a teacher of Gam Primary School.

Gam is situated about 110 kilometres southeast of Tsumkwe.

Spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Otjozondjupa Region, Inspector Maureen Mbeha on Tuesday said Kaurumine was positively identified by his close relatives on Monday.

“He died on Saturday shortly after he allegedly lost control of his vehicle on a curve and it overturned on the Gam-Tsumkwe gravel road,” said Mbeha.

The accident occurred at about 16h00, approximately 15 kilometres east of Tsumkwe settlement.

In a separate incident, 11 people on Monday afternoon survived a road accident after a minibus they were travelling in overturned twice on the B1 road near Okahandja.

“It is alleged the Quantum had a left rear tyre burst and its 36-year-old male driver lost control over it, causing the vehicle to overturn,” said Mbeha.

The Quantum was travelling from the direction of Otjiwarongo to Okahandja at the time of accident, said the police officer, adding that it occurred at about 15h44 at approximately 50 kilometres north of Okahandja.

A total of 11 occupants aged between seven months and 57 years were travelling in the vehicle, she said.

The occupants all sustained injuries and were taken to the Okahandja State Hospital where they received medical attention.

Police investigations continue.
