Gladiators move up in world rankings

The Brave Gladiators have moved up 31 places in the latest International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) world rankings released on Thursday.

The Gladiators were previously ranked 145th in the world and are now ranked 114, but moved one place down on the African rankings from 25th to 26th.

However, the team remains in the fifth position in the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) region behind South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Angola.

The United States of America (USA) is the top-ranked nation in the world followed by Sweden and France in third, Germany in fourth and the Netherlands in fifth place.

Nigeria is top-ranked in Africa, followed by Cameroon, Ghana in third, South Africa in fourth and Ivory Coast in fifth.

The Brave Gladiators last played against Zambia in March for the Women Africa Cup of Nations final qualification round, where they bowed out on away goal rules after drawing nil-all in Lusaka and one-all in Johannesburg in the return leg.

In the men’s rankings, the Brave Warriors are now ranked 112th from 110th in the world, but remain 25th on the continent and fourth in COSAFA.

Meanwhile, Brazil has overtaken Belgium as the top-ranked team while France, Argentina, and England remain in the same positions.

In Africa, Senegal remains on top, followed by Morocco, Egypt and Nigeria in the top five.

The men’s rankings were released on 31 March.

The Brave Warriors last played a competitive match on 15 November 2021, where they lost 1-0 to Togo at Orlando Stadium in South Africa.
