Grunau- |Ai-|Ais gravel road claims two lives

Two women died and four other passengers were seriously injured after the vehicle they were travelling in allegedly overturned on the Grunau-|Ai-|Ais road in the ||Kharas Region on Friday afternoon.

The Namibian Police Force’s crime investigations coordinator for the ||Kharas Region, Deputy Commissioner Chrispin Mubebo told Nampa on Sunday that the deceased persons were identified as 15-year-old Elizabeth Johannes and 21-year-old Kapotji Undari both pupils at the Karasburg Combined School. Their next of kin are aware of their deaths.

The incident happened on Friday around 17h00, some 16 kilometres outside |Ai-|Ais on the Grunau- |Ai-|Ais gravel road, when the 38-year-old driver allegedly lost control over the vehicle in a curve causing it to overturn.

The other four passengers aged between 13 and 19 were taken to the Karasburg State Hospital for treatment, he said.

Police at Karasburg are investigating a case of culpable homicide, drunk and driving and reckless and/or negligent driving.

Meanwhile, police at Tses are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a 24-year-old man was run over by a train at the village on Saturday morning.

The deceased was identified as Salmon Diedrick #Eigub a resident of Tses and his next of kin are informed of his death.

The incident occurred between 03h00 and 04h00 on Saturday.

‘It is alleged that the deceased was seen at a house that sells homebrew with his friends while under the influence of alcohol and later left around 00H00, saying he was going to sleep. Preliminary investigation shows that the deceased was sleeping on the railway line when he was run over by the train, his whole body was totally disfigured,” said Mubebo.
