Namibian Olympians arrives to hero’s welcome

Namibia’s Olympic Games silver medalist Christine Mboma and three other athletes arrived to a hero’s welcome at the Hosea Kutako International Airport on Tuesday, afternoon.

Mboma became the first female athlete to win a medal at the just-ended 2020 Tokyo Olympics in Japan when she finished seconds in the 200-metre sprint to break the country’s wait for silverware at this competition.

The last time a Namibian won a medal at the Olympics was in 1996, Atlanta when Frank Fredricks won a silver medal in 100m and 200m events.

On Tuesday here Team Namibia was welcomed by a group that included traditional dancers from the Kavango and Zambezi regions, the Windhoek bikers club and government officials as well as Mboma and Beatrice Masilingi family members who gathered at the airport.

In a short interview with Nampa, Henk Botha the coach of Mboma and Masilingi said he was happy to be back home and appreciated the welcoming gesture by the Namibian people.

Other athletes who also arrived on Thursday are marathon runners Helalia Johannes, Reinhold Tomas and their coach Robert Kaxuxuena.

Team Namibia had 11 athletes who competed in five different sport codes which are, athletics (marathon and track), cycling (road and mountain bike), marathon swimming, rowing and boxing.
