NFA members suspend Exco

The Namibia Football Association (NFA) members dismissed their current Executive Committee (Exco) at the NFA’s 30th annual ordinary congress held here on Saturday.

The annual congress was held despite Confederation of African Football (CAF) Secretary-General (SG) Veron Mosengo-Omba’s recommendations for the NFA to put its plans on hold as the continental body will provide a roadmap to solve the current impasse at Football House.

Mosengo-Omba’s letter of recommendations to NFA Secretary-General (SG) Franco Cosmos follows his fact-finding mission to Namibia last month, when he engaged football stakeholders as per the request of CAF President, Patrice Motsepe.

Mosengo-Omba in the letter also indicated that a joint FIFA-CAF mission will be deployed to Windhoek to deliver the roadmap and the financial plan to put football in the country back on track.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Isak Uwu-Khaeb, chairperson of Otjozondjupa region, said congress Saturday deliberated on a motion which was passed by his region to dissolve and dismiss the Exco with immediate effect.

“We all know NFA has troubles of infights and football has not been played. We expected that after elections on 22 February 2020, the new executive would work together to lead NFA in a new era but unfortunately, this did not happen,” said Uwu-Khaeb, who stated that the lack of cooperation between Exco members has led to a decision of dismissing them with immediate effect at the congress.

He said congress further resolved, as directed by the NFA statutes, to allow its SG to call an elective congress within 90 days where new committee members will be elected.

“Congress further mandated Cosmos to finalise all pending appointments for existing vacancies at the Football Association to allow the organisation to operate to its potential,” he said.

Cosmos on his part told the media that the annual ordinary congress which was held on Saturday is mandatory.

“We notified CAF and the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) that there was an extra-ordinary congress slated for 17 November and CAF wrote to us saying that extra-ordinary congress should be put on hold, but two days later the secretariat wrote to CAF and FIFA again telling them that there is an annual congress slated for 04 December and they did not respond to that, hence the reason we went on with this congress,” Cosmos said.

Approached for comment by Nampa on Sunday, expelled NFA president, Ranga Haikali said he had no comment on what transpired on Saturday.
