President Hage Geingob today departed for Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic Congo (DRC) to participate in the 42nd ordinary Southern African Development Community (SADC) heads of state and government summit.
A statement issued by the Office of the Presidency today said Geingob will join other heads of state to convene the two-day summit under the theme ‘Promoting industrialisation through agro-processing, mineral beneficiation and regional value chains for inclusive and resilient economic growth.’
It noted that Geingob will relinquish the position of Deputy Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, whilst Malawian leader Lazarus Chakwera will hand over the SADC chair to the incoming chair, President Felix Tshilombo of DRC.
The statement indicated that Geingob served as the chairperson of SADC between 2018 and 2019, where he presided over the affairs of the SADC region which saw the 2018 elections in the DRC take place.
This resulted in the first peaceful transfer of power in the history of the DRC since its independence on 30 June 1960.
Geingob will return from the DRC on 18 August 2022.
