Otjiwarongo: Over 40 traditional leaders and their secretaries from the Otjozondjupa, Omaheke, Kunene, and Erongo regions are attending a workshop in Otjiwarongo aimed at equipping them with the knowledge necessary to effectively fulfil their duties within the country's legal framework and customary law. The week-long workshop is organised by the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development, with facilitation by three lawyers from the Ministry of Justice and Labour Relations.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Sankwasa James Sankwasa, officially opened the workshop, emphasizing that traditional authorities should respect national laws in their duties. He highlighted the importance of promoting peace and preserving culture, language, tradition, and values, alongside advancing affirmative action and equality within their communities. Sankwasa stated, "This training aims to strengthen your understanding of the legal landscape, empowering you to navigate it effectively and serve your communities more efficiently."

Sankwasa addressed the ongoing issues of squabbles and disputes over leadership succession, noting their prevalence in the country. He expressed concern that such disputes among members of the same royal family and community prolong the leadership gap left by departed leaders and create unnecessary disunity, hindering community progress. He appealed for greater tolerance and respect for customary laws and norms.

Otjozondjupa Governor, John //Khamuseb, acknowledged the role of traditional authorities as key custodians of Namibia's cultural heritage and social structures. He advocated for continued partnership between traditional authorities and the Government in conflict resolution and community development at the grassroots level. "As legal and governance landscapes evolve, equipping you with comprehensive knowledge of relevant laws and constitutional provisions is essential to empower you in your critical responsibilities," he said. Governor //Khamuseb encouraged participants to actively contribute to the training's success until its conclusion on Friday.

Traditional authorities present at the workshop include representatives from the Hoveka and Maharero royal houses, Ovambanderu, Kapika, Kakurukouje, Otjikaoko, Vita, and Zeraua traditional authorities.
