Namibia on Saturday commemorated Human Rights Day and Namibian Women’s Day, with the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology saying the government is committed to ensuring justice, equality and dignity for all.
Human Rights Day is observed on 10 December after the United Nations’ adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1950, while Namibia observes Women’s Day, which recognises women’s voices and focuses on the need to protect women, on the same day.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) on Saturday said it is the government’s duty to uphold the rights of every human being.
“It is our collective responsibility to uphold human rights for all people regardless of their gender, ethnicity, religion or political affiliation,” said the statement.
Women’s Day was celebrated under the theme, ‘Unite! Activism to end violence against women and girls.’
International Human Rights Day was celebrated under the theme ‘How rights are the beginning of peace within societies, and a way to create a fairer society for future generations.’
It further encouraged Namibians to fight against injustices.
“In unison let us selflessly fight against all forms of human rights violation, for rights are the beginning of peace within societies, ” it said.
