The Katutura Youth Enterprise Centre (KAYEC) youth programme development officer at Rundu, Anton Kamerika has called on the Rundu Town Council to install a speed hump in front of the Rundu Multi-Purpose Youth Resource Centre.

Kamerika told Nampa on Tuesday KAYEC which operates from the youth centre has 222 registered young people and around 40 who visit the centre on a daily basis.

“There is need for a speed hump because of the number of young people coming to the centre combined with speeding problems and recent accidents along the Maria Mwengere road where the youth centre is located,” he said.

Kamerika said many drivers frequently speed through this road, adding that a total of four accidents were already observed last month right in front of the centre.

Traffic volume is also experienced around 17h00 when people get off work making it hard for young people to cross the road safely; a speed hump will calm the traffic to reduce vehicle speed and create safer streets, he noted.

Kamerika said he wrote a letter to Rundu Town Council Chief Executive Officer, Olavi Nathanael in May this year requesting for the installation of a speed hump.

He said although the response from the town council has been positive, that a speed hump will be installed, the centre is still waiting for them to show up.

Nathanael on his part said the speed hump will be installed, explaining that town council was delayed with procuring the needed material.

“We have all the materials now so we are just waiting for the staff from the technical department to go to the site,” he said.

The CEO said noted that when he received Kamerika’s letter he asked the traffic department to go to the site and perform an evaluation on the Maria Mwengere road. This found that many drivers speed on this road.
