The Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation has urged Designated Employers (DEs) to fully comply with the Employment Services Act in terms of vacancy advertisements and recruitment processes.

The Employment Service Act established Namibia Integrated Employment Information System (NIEIS) requires DEs, which are employers with 25 or more employees, to recruit through NIEIS and other means such as local newspapers.

Acting Director at MLIREC, Lydia Indombo in a statement on Friday said that recently, the ministry noted that some DEs, in newspaper adverts, refer job seekers to visit the NIEIS website merely for more information regarding the vacancies, while indicating that applications should be sent directly to them, which is in contravention of the Act.

“The ministry would like to re-emphasise that the job adverts on NIEIS provide a direct link for job seekers to apply via the system. This is done to ensure an equal and fair opportunity to all registered job seekers,” she added.

Indombo further warned employers against the practice of requiring applicants to send job applications directly to them (employers) for positions advertised on NIEIS as it does not only disadvantage the registered job seekers in terms of re-uploading necessary documents but also strains the government’s efforts to provide fair and just placements of job seekers.

She added that the system is designed in such a way that registered DEs have direct access to the system and may access the application of their vacancies as advertised. Furthermore, if DEs feel that there is no need to advertise the vacancy, then they can access the database and draw from a number of qualified job seekers as per their vacancy requirements.
