Serdyn, Schuckmann Win Tennis Titles

Henco Serdyn and Juliane Schuckmann won the men and women’s titles at the second NTA Senior Tennis Tournament that took place at the CTC and Police tennis courts over the weekend.

Namibian Davis Cup player Serdyn beat Herman Kuschke 7-6, 6-4 in a tightly contested final to win the Men’s A Section singles title.

Kuschke gave a good account of himself in an even match, but Serdyn’s powerful serve eventually made the difference.

In the women’s final, the 18-year-old Schuckmann made a great comeback to beat the veteran Amanda van Dyk in three sets.

Van Dyk easily won the first set 6-1, but Schuckmann, who has improved her tactics considerably over the past year, kept her cool to turn the match in her favour by winning the next two sets 7-6, 6-3.

The Men’s B division, which consisted of social players and young aspiring players, saw a large turnout of 21 entrants, while these encounters easily matched the drama and passion which was seen in the Senior A category.

In an epic final of two and a half hours the B championship final was played out by two of Namibia’s top up-and-coming junior players.

The nine-year-old star Connor van Schalkwyk underlined his promise to become a top tennis player in future by beating 12-year-old Risto Shikongo in a thrilling three-setter, 6-1, 6-7, 7-5.

Shikongo is sponsored by the FNB Tennis Development Programme under Kallie Heese and has been constantly climbing the national junior ranks since starting to play tennis two years ago.

Along the way, the two youngsters beat senior players Kuda Chani and Estaban Martin to reach the final.

The Women’s B section saw a dramatic final between Joyce Stalls and Elvira Smith of the City of Windhoek tennis team. After a long two-hour struggle the match went into a decisive third set, but unfortunately Smith hurt her right ankle and had to concede victory to Stalls due to injury.

High level tennis was also observed in the men and women’s double competitions. In the Men’s A division Nicky Buys and Rian de Witt beat Werner Schuckmann and Christopher Engelhardt 6-3, 6-1.

The Men’s doubles B section saw an upset when the junior team of Luke Symonds Mayes and Codie van Schalkwyk prevailed 6-4, 6-0 against the much more experienced Central Tennis Club duo of Sam Kaulinge and Kuda Chani.

The Women’s A category doubles was won by the veteran pair of Amanda van Dyk and Rihetta Swarts, who easily beat Melissa Khupe and Barvely von Luttichau 6-0, 6-0 in the final.
