Sports awards drawing closer

WINDHOEK; The closing date for this year’s sports awards is less than a week away, and only a few athletes have thus far been nominated for awards.

The Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) thus called on sports codes to submit the names of their athletes they wish to be recognized with awards this year before the deadline of 30 September.

The awards’ ceremony is slated for 31 October at the Windhoek Country Club.

NSC vice-chairperson Amos Shiyuka said during a media briefing on Thursday that many sports codes have not yet submitted the names of their athletes for possible recognition by the NSC.

“At the end of the day, these are the same people who will start complaining or crying foul that their athletes are not being considered for the awards,” he said.

Shiyuka added that the NSC cannot submit names of athletes, because it cannot be the judge and the referee at the same time.

Lesley Tjiueza, the vice-chairperson of the awards’ judging panel, said codes should adhere to the rules and regulations when nominating their candidates.

“When you nominate an athlete for the Sportsman or Sportswoman of the Year awards, you need to give a detailed motivation why these specific athletes should be considered for these awards,” he said.

“At least explain to us what events the athlete participated in throughout the year – nationally and internationally – to make work easier for all the parties involved when looking for information on such an athlete on the Internet if we don’t have a record of it at our disposal,” said Tjiueza.

Athletes allegeable for nomination are those who have been in action from October 2013 to September 2014.

The announcement of the final nominated athletes will be on 14 October.
