38TH SADC SUMMIT AND ASSOCIATED MEETINGS BEGIN IN WINDHOEK WEDNESDAY

WINDHOEK-- The 38th Ordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and associated meetings will be gin in Windhoek on Thursday, culminating in the summit of Heads of State and Government of members of the 15-nation grouping on Aug 17 and 18.

According to the programme released by the Namibian Ministry of International Relations and Co-operation here Monday, the actual summit will be preceded by a series of meeting and events involving first the senior officials and then Cabinet Ministers from Thursday.

These will include the meeting of the SADC Standing Committee of Senior Officials; the SADC Finance Sub-Committee; the SADC Council of Ministers meeting and the Double Troika Summit.

"The Council of Ministers oversees the functioning and development of the 15-nation SADC, implementation of policies, programmes and advises the Summit on matters of overall policy, including the efficient as well as harmonious functioning of the institution," a ministry statement said.

The official opening of the summit will take place on Friday at the Safari Conference Centre in Windhoek, where the outgoing SADC Chair, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, will hand over to the incoming Chair, Namibian President Hage Geingob to officially host the 38th SADC summit.

Namibia last hosted such a SADC event in 1992, when leaders from the region signed the SADC treaty and declaration that effectively transformed the then Southern African Development Co-ordination Conference to the Southern African Development Community.

The summit is responsible for the overall policy direction and control of functions of the community, making it the policy-making institution of SADC.
