Conchita Olivier dismisses the bail application of double murder suspect Ernst Lichtenstrasser

Swakopmund magistrate Conchita Olivier yesterday dismissed the bail application of double murder suspect Ernst Lichtenstrasser.

Lichtenstrasser stands accused of murdering Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology (NIMT) director Eckhart Mueller and deputy director HeimoHellwig, who were shot to death in front of the NIMT campus office block in Arandis on 15 April 2019.

Olivier listed the seriousness of the crime as one of the reasons for the State denying bail to 58-year-old Lichtenstrasser.

The State has a strong case against the applicant and granting bail is not a risk it want to take, Olivier said during her ruling in the Swakopmund Magistrate's Court.

The magistrate also highlighted public interest as one of the main reasons for opposing bail, noting the number of signatures gathered for a petition and demonstrations held opposing Lichtenstrasser's bail.
