Endola Constituency Councillor Ruth Nhinda passes away

ONGWEDIVA: The Ohangwena Region was shrouded in sadness this weekend following news of the deaths of the region’s Endola Constituency Councillor, Ruth Nhinda and retired Oshikango Constituency Councillor, Hiyavelwa Usko Nambinda.

Ohangwena Regional Governor Usko Nghaamwa confirmed that Nhinda passed away at Mediclinic Windhoek at around 03h00 on Sunday.

He said Nhinda’s death is a big loss to the Endola Constituency, the Ohangwena Region and the whole country.

Nghaamwa referred to her as a brave, strong and hard working woman.

“She initiated a lot of development projects for her constituency and the region and at the same time contributed immensely to debates in the National Council (NC), where she was a member representing our region,” he said.

Nhinda has been the Endola councillor and Swapo-Party member in the NC since 2004.

Nhinda and Maria Kombwana, who died due to cancer in the Ongwediva Medipark in May this year, were the only two female councillors in the Ohangwena Region.

More details regarding the circumstances of her death were not immediately available.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Ohangwena Region, Sergeant Kaume Iitumba confirmed Nambinga’s death to Nampa on Sunday.

Iitumba said Nambinga, 71, died after his vehicle collided head-on with a truck with Angolan registration on Friday.

It is alleged that the Angolan truck driver was driving on the wrong side of the road.

The accident occurred on a curve between Helao Nafidi’s Onhuno and Ohangwena settlements on the Ondangwa-Oshikango main road at around 22h00.

Nambinga who had been travelling with his wife, died on the scene.

Iitumba said his wife and the truck driver survived the collision with severe injuries and have been admitted to the Engela District Hospital where their conditions were reported as stable on Sunday afternoon.

The police have opened a case of culpable homicide in connection with the collision.
