Fuel tanker goes up in flames at Usakos

SWAKOPMUND: A fuel tank went ablaze at Usakos early Wednesday morning after another truck which was parked next to it caught fire.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined as the police are investigating the matter.

The driver of the burnt truck, a Namibian citizen also burnt his leg and arm while attempting to put out the fire.

Detective Chief Inspector of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) at Walvis Bay Erastus Iikuyu confirmed the incident to Nampa on Wednesday,

He said the incident took place at the truck parking area near Engen Service Station between 05h00 and 05h00.

Iikuyu said a Zambian cooler tank truck parked next to the Namibian fuel tank truck caught fire and spread it to the fuel tank.

He noted that the driver of the Zambian truck noticed the fire and drove away the truck from the burning tank.

“The two drivers then started fighting the fire but failed as they only have fire extinguishers. In the process one of them caught fire,” he said.

Iikuyu said the police is still waiting for more information such as the severity of the damage, the health status of the driver who is injured and the companies to which the trucks belong.
