Helalia Johannes crowned 2019 MTC Sports Star

Marathon runner Helalia Johannes was crowned the Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) Sports Star of the year with top prize of N.dollars 200 000 during the Namibia Annual Sport Awards (NASA) held at Ondangwa on Saturday.

She was crowned in absentia, as she was reportedly in China for the Military World Games. Johannes was also awarded the 2019 NASA's Sportswoman of the year, while Jannie Meuwesen is the Sportsman of the year.

Also achieved high is Quinn Redding (archery), who was awarded the Northern Electricity Distributor (Nored) People's Choice Sports Star of the year, as well as the Junior Sportswoman award.

The Paralympic athletes, Johannes Nambala and Lahja Ishitile are the Sportsman and Sportswoman with Disability of the year, respectively.

Delano Muller (kick boxing) is the Junior Sportsman of the year, while Orange Primary School learner Johannes Shilongo, who featured prominently in the media as a one-leg boy playing football with other boys in the Omusati Region recently, received the Community Inspiration award.

Some 20 awards were received by several sports personality during the NASA held for the first time in northern Namibia.

Speaking at the event, Sport, Youth and National Service Minister Erastus Uutoni said hosting NASA in Ondangwa demonstrates the efforts by his Ministry and the National Sports Commission to reach out to all the corners of Namibia in terms of sport development.

Uutoni narrated that NASA is not only about awarding sportsmen and women, but it also the promotion of sport as a tool to unite Namibians in their multiplicity.
