Khorixas Town Council to impose fines on illegal sand mining

Khorixas Town Council (KTC) will be imposing stiffer finers on illegal sand mining in the boundaries of Khorixas, Chief Executive Officer of KTC Andreas Howoseb has said.

This follows some incidents of illegal sand mining cases reported to the council over the past weekend.

Sand harvesting without the consent of the council is illegal. A fee must be paid in order to have sand delivered by the town council to any person that is interested. We strongly advise the resident not to gather sand for any purpose without our consent, he said.

He added that the council has warned residents practicing such illegal activities to refrain.

Howoseb said that an extra N.dollars 800 will be fined on top of the council tariffs if any person is found gathering sand illegally.

Investigation are usually done if such cases are reported the public. Our technical team goes out there and investigates such instances thoroughly. Ones investigations are done the council take the next steps.

Sand mining damages our environment. It is important that the persons that are gathering sand illegal be informed about the important sand plays in the environment. The council will engage the community from time to time on the importance of sand and why it is important to consult the council if they want sand, he said.
