Man gets 25 years for killing girlfriend in axe attack

A young man who earlier this month (10 October 2019) admitted in the High Court to the brutal murder of his girlfriend by chopping her to death with an axe during October 2017 at a farm in the Gobabis area, was on Wednesday sentenced to an effective 25 years imprisonment.

The 23-year-old Johannes Bock, on the charge of murder with direct intention to kill for chopping his late girlfriend Martha Afrikaner, 22, with an axe on the head during a heated quarrel on 05 October 2019 at farm Dabis in the Gobabis area, was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment.

Five (5) years of the sentence was suspended for a period of five (5) years on condition that Bock is not found guilty of any criminal offence related to domestic violence, murder or culpable homicide during the period of suspension.

Bock was thus sent to jail for an effective total of 25 years.

Acting High Court Judge Kajijata Kangueehi handed down the punishment in the matter on Wednesday morning.

'Johannes Bock was armed with a very deadly weapon- being an axe- when he mercilessly chopped the deceased person on the head on 05 October 2017, causing her immediate death. These types of criminal offences committed against defenceless women and children are very prevalent in the country. At the moment, the community is shuttered by these acts of violence against women and children. The deceased ended her life in a very brutal manner, ' said Acting Judge Kangueehi before he sent Bock behind bars.

Convict Bock is first-time offender with no records of previous convictions, showed genuine remorse and pleaded for mercy when testifying before court.

Bock's Legal Aid-funded defence lawyer Milton Engelbrecht asked the court to impose a direct prison term of about 23 years while State Advocate Erick Moyo wanted the court to hand down a custodial sentence of 35 years.

Bock and Afrikaner has a minor child together.
