Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare is proposing entering into partnerships with non-governmental organisations

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare (MGECW) is proposing entering into partnerships with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and town councils to operationalise their shelters for gender-based violence victims countrywide.

Currently, the only fully operational shelter is Friendly Haven Shelter - which houses abused women and children in the Khomas Region, and as a result of the success of this shelter, MGECW is considering similar partnerships.

The shelter is run by a group of women from different religious denominations and subsidised by the ministry.

MGECW completed the renovations of seven shelters in the 2018/19 financial year, but only Friendly Haven is utilised and five are used in emergency cases.

The five are located in Opuwo, Eenhana, Outapi, Rundu and Keetmanshoop.
