Olufuko girls arrive for initiation

OUTAPI: Over 70 young girls on Tuesday entered the initiation homestead as part of the five-day 2014 Olufuko Annual Festival (OAF) at Outapi in the Omusati Region.

Spokesperson of the Outapi Town Council, Fillipus Shililifa told Nampa on enquiry Tuesday that the number of participating girls has tripled – from 22 last year to more than 70 girls this year.

The girls will stay in that homestead and go through different initiation performances as from Tuesday until at the end of the OAF on Monday.

“They (girls) are from all over the Omusati Region, particularly from the region’s traditional authorities of Ombalantu, Ongandjera, Ombadja, Uukwaluudhi, Uukolonkadhi and Uukwambi,” Shililifa noted.

The OAF is hosted at Outapi every year in August under the patronage of the Founding President Dr Sam Nujoma since 2012.

Festivities consist of demonstrations of traditional activities, traditional sports and dances among others.

President Hifikepunye Pohamba is anticipated to open the 2014 OAF officially in the presence of Nujoma and Youth, National Service, Spors and Culture Minister Jerry Ekandjo on Friday.

The OAF officially starts on Wednesday this week.
