Road accident outside Kalkfeld claims 13 lives

Thirteen people have been confirmed dead in a fatal road accident that occurred on the Kalkfeld-Otjiwarongo road on Friday afternoon.

Spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Otjozondjupa Region, Inspector Maureen Mbeha in an interview with Nampa on Saturday said the accident occurred a kilometre north of Kalkfeld at about 17h35 on Friday.

It is suspected that a 34-year-old driver of a 16 seater passenger bus allegedly lost control over it after its left rear type burst and caused it to overturn several times.

Mbeha said a total of 45 people majority being minor children were involved in this accident, adding that they were travelling in the bus on a church mission from Okamatapati in the Okakarara Constituency to the coastal towns.

The police officer said 13 people which includes three-female juveniles, six female adults, a male adult, and three juvenile males who are yet to be identified by their close relatives all died on spot in the accident.

Mbeha said that a total of 26 people are receiving medical attention in the Otjiwarongo State Hospital for slight to serious injuries, while six others including the driver of the bus have been transferred to Windhoek in critical condition.

Preliminary police investigations indicate the accident involved victims aged between six-months and 60 years.
