Seven inmates escape from Du Plessis holding cells

Seven inmates who were awaiting trail escaped from the Du Plessis Police station holding cells on Friday at about

17h00 after they allegedly attacked and overpowered the police officer on duty.

According to a weekend crime report availed to this agency on Monday, the Sergeant who was allegedly the only member on duty in the charge office,

took an inmate who assisted with preparing meals back to the cells, when one of the escapees grabbed the door while the Sergeant was closing the

cell. Other inmates allegedly joined forces and overpowered the officer.

Two of the escapees, Tuneeko Vevaraune and Uapama Maharero were re-arrested on Sunday, both are back in custody at Du Plessis Police Station.

However, five escapees are still at large, they are Jooste Katjiremba (33), Uerinjona Mbaha (23), Johannes Simon (22), Hafeni Johannes (27) and 31

year old Ngatuuane Rambo.

The public is hereby urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons to nearby police station.

In an unrelated matter, a 58 year old man committed suicide after he hang himself with a rope in a toilet outside his house on Tuesday.

It is alleged that the deceased was found by his son hanging from the roof in a toilet outside the house in Damara Block, Gobabis.

According to the police report the family started searching for him at around 21h30 after he left the house at about 11h00 and was not seen throughout the day.

The deceased has been identified as Silvanus Helao.

No suicide note was left and his next of kin have been informed.
