Sports club for people with disabilities established at Windhoek

WINDHOEK: A sports club for people with disabilities called Mariental Winners Sport Club was established at the town on Tuesday, under the guidance of the Namibia Paralympic Committee (NPC) management.

The aim of the club is to bring together people of different disabilities and backgrounds in Mariental.

In a statement availed to Nampa yesterday, the NPC said there has been no sport club for people with disabilities at the town for the past 20 years.

The statement added that the athletes will train twice a week in the different codes of athletics, power lifting and table tennis.

Equipment and technical support, especially in coaching, are however the biggest obstacles at the moment.

The club’s president Johannes Goroeb; secretary Latoya Karigus; and treasurer Roger Cloete will manage the club and additional members are Immanuel Reinecke and Jerome Hangue.

NPC Secretary-General Michael Hamukwaya said the committee is happy to see more people with disabilities getting involved in para-sports in Namibia and he hopes that in future all the regions will have associations to run their own activities.
