Sports Expo gets N.dollars 300 000 shot in the arm

The Namibia Sports Expo on Tuesday received a timely boost when the Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) donated an amount of N.dollars 300 000.00 dollars the event scheduled for the first week of September.

In a media event to hand over the money in the capital, Ohlthaver and List, (the holding company of NBL) Corporate Communications Manager Roche Locke said O and L and NBL recognised the opportunity to be involved in sports as it brings people together and celebrating oneness.

We are very excited to come on board as the main sponsor to this event. We want to call on the rest of corporate Namibia and Namibians at large to support initiatives like this because they enhance lives of not only the athletes, but the entire country, she said.

Locke added that the sponsorship will help cover for the activities that will take place on the day, saying they are committed to the success of the event as they make the dream of professionalising sports come true.

In accepting the sponsorship, Joel Mathews, the chairperson of the Namibia Sports Commission said such support is needed in Namibia as it support for issues of development and progress.

We applaud such kind of support as it ensures that the first ever Namibian Sports Expo will become a reality. After the expo, we will look at professionalising sport and this will help create employment and fight poverty, he said.

He added that the expo will also help sports together with other sectors like the construction, health, and tourism industries for example.

You will see many exhibitors from various sectors coming to showcase how they are aligned to sports. This is when these industries will help us professionalise sports. This can be done if sports can generate finances by itself and stop depending on government, he explained.

The expo will be held from 4 to 7 September at the Independence and HageGeingob Stadiums where local and international exhibitors are expected to participate.

Several other sporting activities such as a seven-a-side tournament and a fun run/walk will be launched during the expo.

The expo announced exhibition registration dates, which already opened on 04 June and run until 30 July.

A late exhibition registration period runs from 01 to 31 August.
